Autopsy Report: Myths and Truths, You Decide

There are thousands of Elvis fans to this day. For those who were alive when he died there was great devastation. Many couldn't believe it, many didn't want to believe it, and some strongly believed it wasn't true. Whether it was because they were doubters, knew it for a fact or were so in love with the rock'n'roll king that they convinced themselves he was still alive is a mystery. So here I present to you facts and stories and will let you take away from this what you want. Enjoy.

On August 16th, 1977 Elvis Aaron Presley died.

It is believed Elvis had had a late night dentist appointment on the night of the 15th, and went home to Graceland to finish some final details on a tour he was starting on the 17th. He went to bed at about 7 in the morning to rest up for his evening flight. While getting ready for bed he must have died. He was living with his fiancee, Ginger, but they were staying in separate rooms, so no one was with him during his final hours.

Some reports indicate that Elvis was naked and in the bathroom when he died, while others say he was in blue pajamas and in his dressing room. It's also possible that he was in blue pajamas in the bathroom or naked in his dressing room. Nevertheless he was discovered by his then fiancee, Ginger.

He was found in the afternoon and there was an attempt to revive him. Later it was believed that he had been dead for several hours before he was found, and resuscitating would have been pointless. Police said there appeared to be no "foul play".

Autopsy reports said that he had anywhere from 8-14 drugs in his system. Some people believed he died of a drug overdose while others said all the drugs in his system were prescribed to him and were not enough to kill a man. It has been reported that Elvis died of a massive heart attack. Many people believe Presley would have died whether he had drugs in his system or not because he had such a bad heart.

The news of Elvis' death hit the world hard. People went into mourning faster than they did when JFK was assassinated. Fans stormed Graceland wanting to be there during the funeral. Could Elvis Presley, the King of Rock'n'Roll really be dead?

There was a viewing and thousands of people went to see their rock'n'roll idol's lifeless body. It's reported that 75,000 people wanted to see the body and about 30,000 people were able to. Is it possible to say that if this many people saw the King dead that he really was and still is dead to this day? Apparently this isn't good enough for some fans because rumors and "sightings" of Elvis being alive are still flying around to this very day.

Much like the stories of Kennedy's death being a conspiracy, and the moon landings being a hoax are the stories of Elvis faking his own death. Whether these stories are true or just a bunch of mumbo-jumbo, I'll let you decide.

First lies the question of Elvis' gravestone. It's said that it was originally spelled wrong. Elvis' name was Elvis Aaron Presley and on the gravestone it was spelled Elvis Aron Presley, but when I tried to look up proof of this I couldn't find any. Either the error was corrected or it never happened and was just a rumor started by someone who believed Presley was still alive.

Then there was the coffin and the body inside the coffin. Wax you say? It's possible. People are reported to have said that when they were carrying the 900 pound coffin they felt a cool air, supposedly because of an air conditioner to keep a wax body cool. Maybe this was the realistic body people saw when they went to view his body.

A story of Elvis faking his own death has drifted around hoping to make people believe that Elvis is an undercover agent fighting the war against drugs. Because Elvis was so against the use of drugs it was decided that Elvis should "die" so he could fight this drug battle without anyone suspecting him. (Read more here.)

There is a story that Elvis was going to expose some criminals, possibly those who were apart of the Mafia. If he did this his life would be in grave danger. So much in fact that he would have to become apart of witness protection and disappear. Someone so famous couldn't possibly "just disappear" so a cover story was formed so he would be gone for good. Wouldn't be funny if the criminals were caught or died and Elvis "came back from the dead"?

How would a person fake their own death? Apparently Elvis was "a pharmaceutical expert" and knew exactly what drugs to take to make it look as though he were dead (I believe that this would backfire though when the autopsy starts seeing as how they have to cut you open). Shortly after his death a man, looking remarkably like Elvis Presley, boarded a plane head for Buenos Aeries. He went by the name John Burrows, a name Elvis supposedly used every once in awhile when he didn't want publicity. (Read much, much more on the topic here.)

The myths of Elvis faking his own death and still being alive to this day continue to circulate everyone around the world. People are constantly "seeing the King". But what is true, and what is not? Is any of it true? You decide.

(This post has been dedicated to my friend Wendy. The biggest Elvis fan I know! And to be honest she has helped my own love of Elvis to blossom. Love you, Wendy!)

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme

For my music class I had to analyze a song of my choice. So I chose Simon and Garfunkel's Scarborough Fair/Canticle. Part of the assignment was to look at the meaning of the song and the culture surrounding it. That was by far my favorite part about this assignment.

This piece is actually two songs together. Scarborough Fair was written a long time in Europe about a fair that lasted 45 days. Canticle was a song written by Simon and Garfunkel. The meaning behind all the words in Scarborough Fair are much debated but as it is related to the second song Simon and Garfunkel sing with it the meaning is probably this:

In the lyrics the singer is constantly mention "parsley, sage, rosemary thyme". Supposedly these four herbs were put on peoples bodies if they died of the plague to keep the plague from spreading to other people. Canticle is clearly an antiwar song, if you listen to the lyrics it talks about men who are soldiers that kill simply because they are told to but don't know the reason why. During a concert Simon said the two songs together represented loss.

Below are the lyrics to both songs as arranged by Simon and Garfunkel:
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsely, sage, rosemary & thyme
(Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground)
Without no seams nor needlework
(Blankets and bedclothes a child of the mountains)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)

Tell her to find me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsely, sage, rosemary, & thyme
(Washed is the ground with so many tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather
(War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions)
Parsely, sage, rosemary & thyme
(Generals order their soldiers to kill)
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather
(And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

*The words in parenthesis are Canticle.

Marty, we have to take you back to the FUTURE!

Before school started a friends and I went to a town near my house. We call it Olde Town. In Olde Town there was a movie being projected on the library wall so everyone in town could gather and watch what ever film they were showing, for free. Anybody remember my post on films? If you don't click here. I talk about how in the thirties people used to go into town to watch movies being projected on walls. And being there I felt like I had just gone back in time.

Ok not too far back in time because we watched Back to the Future. And since that takes place in 1985 there was only so much time traveling we could do. But ironic that I felt like I was traveling to the past and the movie all about traveling to the past and trying to get to the future again.

And that movie rocks because they manage to get the song 'The Power of Love' to last for an hour.

If you want a taste of the 50s I highly recommend this movie. Not only do they have 50s clothing, 50s style and 50s music but it's the 50s... (:

Ahh.. Neil

What?! Three posts in one day? Has Resa completely lost her mind and gone cRaZy?! Is she bored, avoiding homework or simply that awesome.

Let's go with the last one. It's my favorite of all the choices.

Today we were headed downtown and as we were driving I was able to get my family to listen to Neil Diamond. Both my parents grew up with him and went to concerts of his and everything! They are both fans.

My life is complete. I'm inclined to start weeping joyously. Instead I might just die happy.

Let's admit it, people, Neil Diamond has a sexy voice.

What are people's favorite songs sung by Neil Diamond?

Not Snoopy's Friend... Woodstock

Forty-one years ago today something the world knows as Woodstock occurred. It was and still is the biggest gathering of people in one place ever known. Over 500,000 people came to this three days of "Peace & Music".

The concert had been planned months in advance. It took place during the war in Vietnam, when so many were afraid of being drafted. Because of their growing fear many boys and their girlfriends decided to become peace lovers and express their new beliefs by becoming hippies and listening to music that said exactly what they were feeling.

Many teenagers ran away from home to see the concert. Other youngin's had been planning the trip for weeks and started out early so they could get the best seats on the field where the concert was to take place. From the stories I've read many people have agreed going was "totally worth it." Some unfortunate souls could not make it inside the concert seeing as there were too many people already in and no more tickets left. These individuals camped on neighboring lawns and listened to the muffled music from a distance, still enjoying the experience of being surrounded by other peace-loving hippies.

But the concert wasn't exactly what I would call an ideal place to go. There was tons of drugs being passed around and there were so many people jam packed into one small area it was almost impossible to leave the spot you were at. Once you were inside the concert there was no getting out. And a great deal of the experience was slipping around in the mud due to the pouring rain. (But according to many people's accounts going to Woodstock was the first time they became aware of the fact that they could eat healthy. So there's something positive.)

As for the artists and their music... for three days straight there was constant music. Here is the line up of artists and the songs they played:

Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven O'clock Twelve O'clock Rock!

Seeing as how I love music I might as well write this article. First of all I would like to say that rock'n'roll was started in the United States. It began in the late '40s and continued to be a big hit for young people across the country in the '50s. Up until this time the most popular music in the country was the Big Band music of the '20s, '30s and '40s.

Rock and roll was a combination of several different types of music. Mostly jazz and blues with a little country, folk, gospel and boogie-woogie mixed in there. When rock music first came about the main instrument was usually a saxophone or a piano, in about the mid to late '50s this was changed to the guitar, something that has continued to this day.

The golden age of rock and roll is considered the '50s and '60s which I most definitely believe because I've heard Bill Haley and His Comets, The Coasters, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, etc. Most of it is much better than you will hear today, but I am bias.

One of the most popular rock'n'roll forms in the '50s was what is known as the "doo wap". Some of the songs that people may recognize as doo wap songs are Earth Angel or maybe Why do Fools Fall in Love?

Starting in the 1950s many diner owners started buying jukeboxes. They were boxes filled with popular, usually, rock'n'roll music. Anyone who was willing to pay a certain price could put a coin in the box and chose one song to play so they could listen or maybe dance to it.

Anyway I don't have much more to say on the topic. If you want to listen to some '50s rock'n'roll may I suggest a few songs?

Yakety-Yak - The Coasters
Johnny B. Goode Chuck Berry
That'll Be The Day Buddy Holly & the Crickets
Aint That A Shame Fats Domino

Enjoy!!

Rock Around the Clock

Last night my aunt and uncle were just sitting around watching TV after watching The Book of Eli and I guess maybe we were looking for something lighter and more fun to watch after such an intense crazy movie. Anyway, my uncle landed on a movie called Rock Around the Clock. I'm telling you, if you want a movie jam packed (I love jam!) full of great fifties music, especially fifties rock this is the movie for you. Starring Bill Haley and the Comets, The Platters and Freddie Bell and the Bellboys.

The movie was made in 1956 and is a classic black and white picture. It stars Lisa Gaye, with her adorable, curvy figure and great dance moves along with Johnny Johnston as Steve Hollis, the man who is trying to get Bill Haley and the Comets famous.

Bill Haley and His Comets

Freddie Bell and the Bellboys

The Platters
